Putting Educational Innovations into Practice.

An Anthropological Introduction to YouTube

This 55:33 minute video provides a very informative and overarching perspective of what is happening in the media that now surrounds us. Professor Michael Wesch, digital enthnographer from Kansas State, developed and presented this clip at the Library of Congress, June 23rd 2008. He decided to forgo the PowerPoint and instead worked with students to prepare over 40 minutes of video for the 55 minute presentation. This is the result. More info: http://mediatedcultures.net

The opening 5-7 minutes of this clip put the growth and speed of Web 2.0 technologies at a global level into perspective for us. As educators, it is useful to be both aware and informed about how technology, social connections, and cultural trends are occurring.

I just heard Wesch at the League for Innovation conference in Salt Lake City. Thought-provoking stuff! He shared some of the work he's doing, including bits from the above video. He would be good to have at a MERLOT conference.

Hi, Phil, That's a great idea. I will ask the MIC '09 Committee Chair to check into that. I have a conference call with her on Tuesday, October 21. I have been following his efforts since January 2007.
