I was wondering if we would be able to create subgroups for the different courses. This way instructors from specific courses could communicate directly and read other conversations that are directly related to their topic.

that was my thought as well. We could create a forum for each course. My question is whether faculty would participate. Personally, I think I would be more likely to participate if we had a specific goal within a time frame. For example, prior to our annual meetings, we could discuss our course curriculum, texts, assignments, etc. For me, though, I don't think I would login regularly unless I had a goal. Does that make sense?

Karen-

Good to hear from you. I think it is important that we have a discussion about the practical ways we can use Merlot for faculty discourse. We know that faculty are not going to be continually checking into the discussion areas, so we need to consider ways that it can really create a practical format for discourse. Maybe, it is as simple as making sure everyone turns on the alert feature.

That is my two cents for what it is worth.

I agree, this site is not something I visit regularly. However, when I am alerted that someone has posted a message--then I go in and read the message. We need to create some connection with the classes we teach---so that those of us teaching that core course will have a need to respond to discussion prompts--and or issues. The alert e-mail of a posting is one way. It is much like the discussions we have our students engage with--when there are no points (grades) assigned to the discussion section--the number who post responses is more limited. A real need for the interaction is what will drive the use of this forum. So the questions are: What is the need for our interaction? What do we want from this conduit? How do we integrate it into our routine of teaching in the area of Reach Higher? Those might be the questions you want to discuss at the upcoming conference.

My original thought about Voices was to use it to communicate with a purpose within a time frame. For example, if we're refining or modifying the curriculum for a specific course, what a great place to centralize communication. The advantage to email is that it archives material in one location.

We'll need to differentiate between MERLOT and Voices. Merlot is the repository of resources where faculty can post resources, search for materials, create a bookmark list, and provide and receive feedback on materials in the repository. Give me your thoughts about both MERLOT and Voices. Thanks!

That differentiation is important. There are things we can do functionally with Voices--it can help us collectively work through an issue with the resulting product being available for all of us teaching that specific course. I'm not sure I see how it will be much different from e-mails to all those teaching a specific course with reply to all as we work throught the issue? But I do agree it should not be a resource that duplicates what MERLOT does.

Glad this board is getting some activity.
I am a newbie regarding Merlot, and am currently fascinated by all things Merlot.
Given the low number of people who have signed on to voices, I think a rudimentary explanation of how we establish an account and then a discussion of how we plan to utilize this board.
Fer enstence is ther a speal chack associated with it? LOL
